Facilities and Technical Capabilities

Our laboratory is located in the VA San Diego Medical Center in La Jolla right next to UCSD campus. The lab consists of 4 laboratory bedrooms plus a patient lounge and faculty and staff offices.

Some of our technical capabilities include:

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (FMRI) as well as related data storage and anaylsis facilities.
We have access to GE 3T short bore scanners (GE Excite HDx) for human studies. These systems operate on GE software platforms and consoles, and are equipped for state-of-the-art high resolution structural imaging, dynamic imaging (echo planar imaging (EPI) and spiral acquisitions), and proton and phosphorous magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS).

Cognitive testing
Trained staff and volunteers are able to perform or administer formal neuropsychological assessments, computerized cognitive tasks, paper & pencil tests, etc.

EEG, PSG (Electroencephalography and Polysomnography) and Power Spectral Analysis
Registered Polysomnographic Technologists perform attended sleep studies utlizing Grass Gamma, Grass Twin, and Compumedics Profusion systems to collect and record sleep data. Pass Plus sleep research software (Delta Software, www.deltapss.com) is used for advanced EEG/PSG analyses.

Actigraphy
We currently use Respironics AW-2 actiwatches. The AW-2 is equipped with a highly sensitive accelerometer and uses actigraphy principals to provide objective data on sleep/wake patterns for multiple days in a person's everyday environment. It also has the ability to record information about the amount and duration of ambient white light illuminance.
